Laura Robson beat 10th seed Maria Kirilenko, below, 6-3, 6-4 in her first-round match yesterday, saving the home contingent from equalling their worst performance at Wimbledon.
Robson joined Andy Murray, her mixed doubles partner at last summer’s Games, as the only Britons to reach the second round of singles competition.
“I’ve never actually done overly well here,” she said. “It was good that I managed to tough it out after I got nervous in the second set.” MORE

New Zealand beat England by five runs in the first T20 international at The Oval last night. The Kiwis batted first and made 201-4, Brendon McCullum top-scoring with 68. Luke Wright scored a valiant 52 in England's run chase, but they fell short, reaching 196-5. MORE
Trescothick: axing of Compton ‘harsh’
The Somerset captain, Marcus Trescothick, believes that England’s decision to drop county team-mate Nick Compton ahead of the Ashes is “harsh”. Instead, Joe Root is set to open with Alastair Cook in England’s warm-up against Essex. MORE

City agree to sell Tevez to Juventus
Manchester City agreed the sale of Carlos Tevez to Juventus for £10m last night – a third of the fee they paid for him – and with the player nearing agreement on personal terms, the club are likely to save £200,000 a week on wages. Tevez will join on a three-year deal. MORE
Corbisiero and Roberts are doubts
Lions head coach Warren Gatland is resigned to being without prop Alex Corbisiero and centre Jamie Roberts for Saturday’s second Test against Australia. Corbisiero is “struggling a little bit” to overcome a calf injury picked up in the first Test.
Murray motivated by Beijing defeat
Andy Murray will seek to avenge his defeat to Lu Yen-hsun in the first round of the Beijing Games in 2008 when the pair meet in the second round at Wimbledon on Court One today. “I learnt a lot from that match,” said Murray ahead of his tie against the world No 75.
Ancelotti named Real Madrid boss
Carlo Ancelotti was yesterday named Real Madrid’s new manager, with Laurent Blanc taking over from him as Paris Saint-Germain’s coach. Ancelotti signed a three-year deal at Real, replacing Jose Mourinho, who rejoined Chelsea as manager.
