From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A man who was shot several times outside his home on a housing estate in Slough, Berkshire, was recovering last night after surgery.

The man, who is in his twenties, was found bleeding on a road in the estate after he tried to escape his attacker.

Armed police and an ambulance went to the scene of the shooting in Rochford Gardens at 3pm yesterday.

Sergeant Dave Lewis, based at Slough, said: "We believe he was shot outside his house and made his way to the other side of the estate through an alleyway."

He added: "He was helped there by members of the public until we arrived.

"It would appear he was shot by someone else but there is no suggestion as to what the offender looked like."

The man was taken for emergency surgery to Wrexham Park Hospital, where his condition was described by staff as stable.

A number of residents heard gunshots and rushed out to see what was happening.

Stephanie Riley, who lives on the estate, said: "I saw the police helicopter circling overhead and came out to find police swarming about."

A police spokesman said that locals had not been at risk from the incident.

"Once the scene was cordoned off it was soon found there was no danger to the public," he said.

The incident is being investigated by Slough CID.
