Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The World Scrabble Championship will begin in Washington at the end of this week. So as the contestants complete their preparations and study all the nuances of difference between the American and English dictionaries (words and spellings from either language are permitted), we are pleased to offer the first comprehensive guide to world Scrabble.

The game, which was invented by Alfred Butts in 1931, is now produced in 29 languages and sold in 121 countries. But different languages, of course, have different letter frequencies, which have to be reflected in the distribution of the various letters and their point values. Giving 10 points, for example, to a Z in Polish Scrabble would be unwarranted generosity of a very high order. Here is the table of Scrabble values in as many different languages as we have room for: English, Afrikaans, Dutch, Italian, Malaysian, Portuguese, Finnish, French, German, Swedish. Note also the additional values: IJ=4 (Dutch), C=3 (Portuguese); =2, O=7 (Finnish); =6, O=8, =6 (German); =3, O=4 (Swedish).
