We love a bargain when dining out, but sometimes the occasion calls for the sort of indulgence that only a thorough emptying of the wallet can provide.

You won't see much change from £100 for a steak at Aragawa, 2-15-18 Nakayamate-dori, Kobe, Japan (00 81 78 221 8547), but this is no ordinary beef. Japanese Wagyu cattle are fed beer and massaged daily to produce the tender and flavour-packed meat.

The opulent Moorish decor at the exclusive Celebrities Restaurant & Bar, The Palace, Royal Mirage Hotel ((00 971 4 399 9999; oneand onlyresorts.com), Jumeirah, is the perfect setting for the Middle Eastern-influenced modern cuisine. Look out for a garlic and parmesan brûlée with a warm salad of shiitake mushrooms, croutons and sesame.

Only a dozen guests per night can sample chef Michael Stadtlander's eight-course £120 menu at Eigensinn Farm, RR#2, Singhampton, Ontario, Canada (00 1 519 922 3128). Dishes such as squab pigeon with white asparagus are created from the produce of local farms.

Guy Savoy is one of the great modern French master chefs. The 10-course, £190 Colours, Textures and Savours menu at his eponymous restaurant at 18 rue Troyon, Paris (00 33 1 43 80 40 61; guysavoy.com) is a must for every gourmet.

The omakase, or chef's menu at Masa, Fourth Floor, Time Warner Center, 10 Columbus Circle, New York (00 1 212 823 9800) will set you back about £200 before you've even had a sip of sake. But connoisseurs of sushi happily pay the price to sit at the bar to watch chef Masayoshi Takayama in action.

The dome of St Peter's is the star of the show seen through the picture windows of La Pergola, Hotel Cavalieri Hilton, 101 Via Cadlolo, Rome (00 39 06 3509 2152; cavalieri-hilton.it). Views aside, German-born chef Heinz Beck's Italian cuisine has earned him three Michelin stars.

It may seem like an unassuming location but only the finest ingredients are served at Petermann's Kunststuben, Seestrasse 160, Küsnacht, Switzerland (00 41 1910 07 15; petermanns. grandestables.ch).

A mere £10,000 will buy you the best table at Galvin at Windows, Park Lane Hilton Hotel, 22 Park Lane, London (020-7493 8000; hilton.co.uk). You get a bespoke tasting menu and a romantic setting in which to propose to your loved one. They'll even throw in the (Moussaieff) ring and honeymoon suite.
