The strangest things you can do this autumn
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The summer may officially be over and with Christmas just three months away, what better way to pass the time in between then to head to one of the many autumnal wacky contests around the UK or overseas.
Whether you fancy a spot of pea throwing or a chance to win your wife's weight in cider (there is a catch), there is something for everybody. Entries for some of the events listed have closed, but go along anyway and work up an appetite for 2010. If you're not the active type, don’t worry, these events make even better spectator sports. Here are ten of the best for autumn:

More information on these events and a further 40 ideas for wacky days out can be found in Wacky Nation (wackynation.com) by James Bamber and Sally Raynes, published by Icon at £9.99. The authors have taken part in over 100 wacky events in the UK and are now writing a second book on their exploits.
