Lewis Hamilton took his fourth victory of the season and his third on the streets of Monaco after a thrilling battle with Red Bull's Max Verstappen, extending his championship lead over Valtteri Bottas in the process.

Despite leading from pole position, an early safety car caused by Charles Leclerc's puncture leaving debris across the track after he hit the wall changed the complexion of the race, with Hamilton needing to nurse his tyres to the end against the attacking Verstappen - the Red Bull youngster needing to pass the leader and build a gap after receiving a five-second penalty for hitting Bottas in the pits.

But Hamilton was able to see the victory home, even after contact with Hamilton two laps from the finish, to take his fourth victory of the season. As a result of Verstappen's penalty, Sebastian Vettel finished second with Bottas third. Re-live the drama below.

Lap 66: Verstappen is pushing Hamilton hard, so hard he nearly tags the tyre wall on the exit of Turn One. Vettel is now right behind him, with the top three separated by just 1.4s! Bottas, meanwhile, has fallen three seconds behind Vettel and is on the brink of falling behind Verstappen once the five-second penalty is added.

Lap 68: Gasly does indeed take fastest lap away from Albon and given there shouldn't be anymore stops this race, you imagine that will be that for the extra point.

Jack de Menezes26 May 2019 15:42

Lap 69: Verstappen gets the call that he's got full power from now until the end of the race.

Hamilton's response to being told he has overtake available to defend: "Oh that's great news."

I don't think he was being sincere...

Lap 70: Verstappen has his first run at Hamilton! The leader smartly puts his car on the inside of the Loews Hairpin and forces the Red Bull to the outside, and there's no way round there.

Jack de Menezes26 May 2019 15:46

Lap 71: Impressively Bottas has caught Vettel and is just 0.5s off the back of the third-placed Ferrari. That relegates Verstappen to fourth with the time penalty, and suddenly Verstappen goes straight on at the Swimming Pool chicane! He avoids the barrier and loses a little bit of time to Hamilton, but maintains position.

Lap 73: Gasly's fastest lap has been broken... by Gasly himself. The Red Bull driver goes even faster, but he's 16 seconds behind Bottas and in a race of his own in fifth.

Jack de Menezes26 May 2019 15:50

Lap 74: Verstappen is getting so close to the back of Hamilton at the Hairpin that there must be millimeters in it. However, Hamilton is positioning the Mercedes perfectly and the pair have pulled away from Vettel, and it's looking like a two-horse race.

Lap 76: Verstappen goes for it and hits Hamilton!

Jack de Menezes26 May 2019 15:53

Lap 76: Verstappen sends one up the inside at the Chicane and Hamilton shuts the door. The Red Bull hits the left-rear of Hamilton's Mercedes and they both go straight on, but crucially neither car appears to be damaged.

Lap 78: Hamilton starts the final lap...
