Despite leading from pole position, an early safety car caused by Charles Leclerc's puncture leaving debris across the track after he hit the wall changed the complexion of the race, with Hamilton needing to nurse his tyres to the end against the attacking Verstappen - the Red Bull youngster needing to pass the leader and build a gap after receiving a five-second penalty for hitting Bottas in the pits.
But Hamilton was able to see the victory home, even after contact with Hamilton two laps from the finish, to take his fourth victory of the season. As a result of Verstappen's penalty, Sebastian Vettel finished second with Bottas third. Re-live the drama below.

Lap 44: There's another development here as Ferrari reveal on the team radio that Vettel is not actually holding back off Verstappen to look after his tyres, but to prevent the car from overheating after early problems with the temperature. He's currently 1.3s off the back of the second-placed Red Bull.
Lap 48: Lapped traffic is becoming a problem here for the leaders, and Hamilton is at the back of a horrible snake that includes Stroll, Russell, Hulkenberg, Perez and Magnussen.
Lap 49: Hamilton gets by Stroll and Russell, but the Racing Point holds up Bottas horrendously through the Swimming Pool and he's dropped nearly 5.5s off the back of Hamilton now, spreading the top four. Verstappen gets the call to "lift and cost", with Red Bull apparently concerned over temperatures and not fuel. That could either be brakes or engine temperature, but Hamilton responds on his radio saying "I'm in big trouble now guys, the left front is dead".
Lap 51: Grosjean pits from fifth to release Gasly, and the Haas emerges in ninth to show the benefits of not pitting during the safety car period. He's jumped Ricciardo, Norris, Magnussen and Hulkenberg through that cycle with an excellent first stint.
Lap 56: Hamilton's complaints are greater than ever now...
Hamilton: "We've lost this race Bono, I can't keep them behind."
Pete Bonnington (race engineer): "OK Lewis, if you can keep the pace to the cars in front and not overtake while keeping the cars behind..."
Hamilton: "I can;t keep them behind! Can't you guys see that?!"
Lap 59: Running order
1. Hamilton
2. Verstappen + 0.5s
3. Vettel +1.7s
4. Bottas +3.1s
5. Gasly +15.9s
6. Sainz +37.1s
7. Kvyat +38.5s
8. Albon +39.7s
9. Grosjean +40.6s
10. Ricciardo +70.9s
Lap 60: 18 laps to go and Hamilton is giving Mercedes a right rollicking here...
I don't know what you guys were thinking when you put these tyres on. We've lost this race.
It's worth remembering that Verstappen has not had a single run at the leader yet...
Lap 61: Having just said that, Verstappen is all over Hamilton through the start of the second sector, but as soon as the Mercedes gets to the tunnel the extra grunt he has pulls him away and means Verstappen cannot attack at the chicane. This is getting tasty.
Lap 63: Gasly pits from fifth. That's a strange one. it's clearly for the fastest lap as he has enough of a gap to come back out still in fifth, but it ends any chance of winning of the four in front of him need to stop again. We'll keep an eye on the fastest lap as it currently resides with Albon, along with the extra point that comes with it.
