Lewis Hamilton took his fourth victory of the season and his third on the streets of Monaco after a thrilling battle with Red Bull's Max Verstappen, extending his championship lead over Valtteri Bottas in the process.

Despite leading from pole position, an early safety car caused by Charles Leclerc's puncture leaving debris across the track after he hit the wall changed the complexion of the race, with Hamilton needing to nurse his tyres to the end against the attacking Verstappen - the Red Bull youngster needing to pass the leader and build a gap after receiving a five-second penalty for hitting Bottas in the pits.

But Hamilton was able to see the victory home, even after contact with Hamilton two laps from the finish, to take his fourth victory of the season. As a result of Verstappen's penalty, Sebastian Vettel finished second with Bottas third. Re-live the drama below.

The Monaco Grand Prix starts at 2:10pm on Sunday 26 May.

Lap 14: So Bottas pits again so that Mercedes can look at any damage caused by that pit-lane clash with Verstappen, which forced the Mercedes into the wall. Merc believe he had a puncture on the rear-right, but he's back out in fourth position and is looking frustrated with that one. Verstappen meanwhile is sweating on a stewards' investigation.

Safety car in at the end of the lap....

Lap 15: GREEN! GREEN! GREEN!

Jack de Menezes26 May 2019 14:33

Lap 16: Another crash! George Russell has spun at Rascasse and he's blocked the track. It was caused by Giovinazzi who spun the Williams, and the Racing Point is blocked along with Leclerc for an eternity. Russell gets going again after slamming it into reverse, but they've lost a lot of time.

Lap 17: Leclerc pits yet again and is now back onto the soft tyres. I'm not entirely sure why, but he had four new sets and was running plumb last, so why not?

Jack de Menezes26 May 2019 14:37

Lap 18: I wondered if the last stop was a last roll of the dice and so it proves for Leclerc as he comes in to retire the second Ferrari. It's been a nightmare home race for the youngster, but he did promise to take a few risks today. Unfortunately it's come back to haunt him.

Lewis Hamilton leads the field into Turn One

Jack de Menezes26 May 2019 14:42

Lap 21: Right, not that all the Leclerc and safety car drama is over, the race will settle down now right? Wrong. Remember that rain forecast? It's just approaching on the radar. Meanwhile, Mercedes actually put Hamilton onto the medium tyres along with Verstappen, whereas Vettel is on hards that should make it to the end of the race.

Of course, any rain could change that.

Jack de Menezes26 May 2019 14:43

Lap 23: Penalty for Verstappen! He gets a five-second time penalty for an unsafe release into the path of Bottas. That wasn't really a surprise...

Jack de Menezes26 May 2019 14:44

Lap 24: So where does that leave Verstappen? Essentially, it drops him back to fifth at the moment as teammate Gasly is running with the top four and just about holding on to them. However, as the gap grows you'd expect the front four to pull away, and it's a question of if he can gap Bottas for third and, possibly, Vettel to stay in second.

Currently, the top four are split by just 4.5s from leader Hamilton to Bottas in fourth.
