Despite leading from pole position, an early safety car caused by Charles Leclerc's puncture leaving debris across the track after he hit the wall changed the complexion of the race, with Hamilton needing to nurse his tyres to the end against the attacking Verstappen - the Red Bull youngster needing to pass the leader and build a gap after receiving a five-second penalty for hitting Bottas in the pits.
But Hamilton was able to see the victory home, even after contact with Hamilton two laps from the finish, to take his fourth victory of the season. As a result of Verstappen's penalty, Sebastian Vettel finished second with Bottas third. Re-live the drama below.

Lap 1: Hamilton gets a good start and is clear of Bottas into turn one, with Verstappen challenging Bottas for second., The Red Bull has to give way though meaning it;s a Mercedes one-two out in front. Behind, Leclerc cuts the first corner and may get a time penalty for that, and by the time they get to the Lowes Hairpin there's contact as Giovinazzi drives into the side of Perez.
Lap 3: Running order
1. Hamilton
2. Bottas
3. Verstappen
4. Vettel
5. Ricciardo
6. Magnussen
7. Gasly
8. Sainz
9 Kvyat
10. Albon
Lap 4: Ferrari will breathe a sigh a relief as Leclerc is cleared by the stewards for not gaining a place when he cut the first corner, and he's immediately on the attack as he gets by Norris at the Hairpin.
Lap 5: So who were the big winners there? Ricciardo has leapfrogged Magnussen on the outside of Turn One to move up to fifth that has him neatly placed as the 'best of the rest', though he is already 10 seconds behind fourth-placed Vettel. Leclerc is up two places to 13th, but he is already a pit stop behind race leader Hamilton, such if the hold-up at Monaco.
Lap 7: Leclerc is getting restless behind Grosjean in the battle for 12th, mainly because he can see everyone in front of him up to Ricciardo such is the train behind the Renault in fifth. Leclerc is showing his nose at every overtaking opportunity possible - and there isn't many at Monaco - and you wonder how long he's going to wait before taking a risk.
Lap 8: Leclerc goes for it! Heading into the Rascasse Hairpin, he slides the Ferrari up the narrowest of gaps on the inside and just eases the Haas out of the way.
Lap 9: Leclerc crashes! He tries to repeat his move on Hulkenberg and hits the inside wall at Rascasse, half-spinning the Ferrari. he drops to 14th, but has a puncture too!
Lap 10: Leclerc has ripped the tyre apart in driving too fast back to the pits, and it's torn the floor of the Ferrari on the right-rear to pieces. There's debris all over the track, and we could be in safety car territory here.
