Falling on 22 April this year, Earth Day has been urging greater protections for the planet for 51 years – mobilising an estimated 1 billion people to take action in the climate crisis.

Thankfully, plenty of brands are stepping up in the global fight too, with many pledging to rethink material choices and production processes.

Without compromising on any quality, sustainable denim labels, eco-friendly clothing labels and ocean-friendly beauty brands are all trying to reduce their carbon footprint.

But the sex toy market, predicted to be worth £27 billion by 2025, still has a lot to do to become more sustainable. With this substantial growth, waste inevitably follows which is motivating some adult toys brands to pursue more responsible sourcing and eco-friendly alternatives to damaging plastic materials.

Womanizer, one of IndyBest’s favourite sex toy brands, is leading the way with the launch of its “premium eco” toy – a product developed with sustainability at its core.

Made from the 100 per cent biodegradable plastic material biolene, the impetus behind Womanizer’s new venture is to provide an alternative to ABS plastics, which are usually used to make sex toys and much harder to recycle.

From Lily Allen’s recent collaboration with the brand to its original premium vibrator earning a spot in our review of the best, we’re big fans of Womanizer.

After a year spent mostly in lockdown, it is no surprise that sales of sex toys have soared – and if you’ve been after a more eco-friendly toy for extra feel-good points, read on for everything you need to know about Womanizer’s first sustainable endeavour.

Womanizer premium eco: £170, Annsummers.com

A production of about 100,000 premium eco sex toys is estimated to save about 10 tonnes of plastic per year. And we can see why, with Womanizer’s toy boasting recyclable packaging, rechargeable materials and most importantly, the use of a more sustainable material called biolene.

The biopolymer material is synthesised from renewable raw materials – mostly corn starch – and carries the environmental benefits of being completely biobased, biodegradable and industrially compostable.

The innovative material was recommended as a substitute for the use of ABS after an academic study proved biolene to hold similar properties, meaning no quality was sacrificed in moving toward a more eco-friendly approach.

With 20,000 tonnes of batteries making their way into a landfill every year in the UK, it’s clear to see the benefits of a rechargeable vibrator, and the charging cord has also been trimmed down to reduce its carbon footprint further.

The latest launch is an eco-friendlier version of the Womanizer premium (£169, Womanizer.com), a toy which earned a spot in our round-up of the best vibrators for solo pleasure.

Our tester praised the toy as “extremely impressive” and “almost silent, beautifully designed, and pretty much guaranteed to hit the spot.”

As well as pioneering a new more sustainable approach to sex toys, the brand has also recently worked with the singer Lily Allen. She created her very own vibrator in collaboration with Womanizer, which was met with rave reviews from our lucky tester.

Measuring up the Liberty (£89.99, Lovehoney.co.uk) against the brand’s other products, our reviewer said: “The toy itself works well. Really, really well actually… it’s very intense, but it’s quiet enough that you could use it comfortably if you don’t have total privacy in your home.”

“It would also be a great next purchase if you’re someone who has an old faithful bullet or rabbit, and you’re ready to move on to something newer and a little more intense,” they added.

Guaranteed not to disappoint, these are all the best vibrators for solo pleasure
