Borussia Dortmund vs Newcastle betting tips
- Both teams to score - no – 29/20 BetVictor
- Donyell Malen to score any time – 3/1 BoyleSports
- Joelinton to be booked – 8/5 Unibet
Newcastle face off against Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park after suffering their first Champions League defeat of the campaign in the reverse fixture a fortnight ago.
Felix Nmecha scored the only goal of the game at St James' Park to condemn Eddie Howe's men to a 1-0 loss in the Group F contest.
Newcastle fell below the German outfit in the standings into third place, but have plenty of time to re-establish themselves in the top two and secure a place in the last 16.
The Magpies have bounced back in strong fashion, inflicting Arsenal’s first Premier League defeat of the season last time out and advancing to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup with a 3-0 win over Manchester United.
Dortmund need a response after losing 4-0 at home to Bayern Munich in Der Klassiker.
Edin Terzic’s men were off the pace from the first whistle and were powerless to prevent Harry Kane scoring a hat-trick in a dominant win for the visitors.
But, another victory for Dortmund over the Magpies would take them within touching distance of the knockout stage.
They’re favoured for the win in the Champions League odds, despite their setback in the Bundesliga.
After looking at the odds from the best football betting sites, here are our predictions for the game.
Will both teams score?
The reverse fixture was a rare misfire in front of goal for the Magpies.
It was only the third time they had failed to score this season in all competitions, joining a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City and a goalless draw against AC Milan in their Champions League opener.
Only City have scored more goals in the Premier League than Howe’s side this term, highlighting how dangerous they can be.
But, the Dortmund defence was able to hold them in check, aided by an injury to Alexander Isak.
It was a surprise that Terzic’s men imploded defensively against Bayern given their stout record entering the fixture. They’ve kept five clean sheets in all competitions this season at Signal Iduna Park, including their stalemate with Milan in October.
Dortmund were a constant threat in the final third at St James’ Park, and only fine goalkeeping from Nick Pope prevented them from adding to the scoreline.
Expect them to flourish in attack once again using the pace of Donyell Malen to trouble the Magpies.
We’re taking the no on both teams to score with BetVictor at 29/20 as Dortmund will be determined to put in a stronger defensive display than their performance at the weekend.
Malen to end his goal drought?
Malen has endured a 10-game goal drought for Dortmund in all competitions, although he should have found the net at St James’ Park.
The Netherlands international was a thorn in the side of the Magpies all evening as he registered seven shots at goal, including three on target.
Pope was on form to deny Malen twice in the early stages of the game, and he could well have had at least two goals on another day.
Newcastle have issues at the back due to injuries as Dan Burn was forced off in their win over Arsenal. Howe could be pressed into playing the inexperienced Tino Livramento or Lewis Hall in place of Burn.
Malen could have a lot of space to roam down the flanks as he did on Tyneside. We’re backing him to find the net for the first time since September at odds of 3/1 with BoyleSports.
Look out for a Newcastle card
Newcastle have averaged over two yellow cards per game in all competitions, collecting 41 in 16 matches. The Magpies added five to their tally in their win over Arsenal in a fiery affair.
Howe’s side are not afraid to put in tackles, especially in the Premier League, although they’ve yet to record a red card this term.
Joelinton’s disciplinary record has improved this year after receiving 13 yellow cards in the 2022/23 season. He has only picked up two in 11 appearances for the Magpies.
His compatriot Bruno Guimaraes has been more of a presence in the referee’s notebook, tallying eight cautions.
The Brazilian is walking a fine line in the Champions League, notching two bookings in three games, and a third would result in a suspension for matchday five.
Joelinton may have to be more active in pursuit of challenges, which could be an issue against Dortmund’s speed.
We’re backing him at 8/5 to pick up a yellow card with Unibet.
Tip: Joelinton to be booked – 8/5 Unibet
