Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert rip Mitch McConnell about 9/11 compensation issue

'Meet with them tomorrow, as soon as possible, and don't make them beg for it,' Stewart urges McConnell

Jon Stewart teamed up with Stephen Colbert to rip Mitch McConnell over the 9/11 first responders compensation issue.

Stewart has been advocating to extend compensations to 9/11 first responders, survivors and their relatives through 2090. The current compensation fund is set to expire next year.

McConnell told Fox News of Stewart’s efforts: “I don’t know why he’s all bent out of shape.”

The Senate Majority Leader also claimed Stewart was “looking for some way to take offence” in his criticism of the lawmakers.

Stewart made a surprise appearance during Colbert’s Late Show on Monday to address McConnell’s comments, popping up from under the host’s desk.

“I’m not bent out of shape. I’m fine. I’m bent out of shape for them,” Stewart said in reference to the first responders.

“These are the first heroes and veterans and victims of the great trillions of dollars war on terror.

“And they’re currently still suffering and dying and in terrible need. You would think that that would be enough to get Congress’s attention, but apparently, it’s not.”

In response to McConnell’s comment in which he said that some lawmakers didn’t attend a previous hearing because of their schedules, Stewart sarcastically added: “I feel like an a******. You know what, Stephen – now I feel stupid. This is a huge misunderstanding. I didn’t know that they were busy. I didn’t mean to interrupt them with their jobs!”

He eventually addressed the Senate Majority Leader directly, telling him: “Meet with them [the 9/11 community] tomorrow, as soon as possible, and don’t make them beg for it.

“You could pass this thing as a standalone bill tomorrow. Meet with them. I beg of you. Meet with them tomorrow.”
