After speaking up for the bullied X Factor New Zealand contestant last week, it seems Ed Sheeran is continuing to cause a storm Down Under.

The singer is due to make an appearance in staple Australian soap Home and Away, it has emerged, after he was seen photographed on set in Summer Bay.

Sheeran, who is in the middle of his sold-out Australia arena tour, said he wasn’t a huge fan of the soap himself but was pleased to have been offered a cameo role.

“It’s an Australian institution. It’s always on in my local chip shop. I got asked to do it and it sounded like it could be fun,” he told Australia’s news.com.au.

“I did Shortland Street in New Zealand as well and I’m sure if Emmerdale or EastEnders ever ask me in England I would do that as well.”

He added; “I have got to a point where I really, really don’t care what people think so I’m doing stuff because I enjoy it now rather than because it might be cool. I am just in it for fun.”

A spokesperson for Australia’s Channel Seven confirmed Sheeran will be appearing as himself in the soap.

“He will appear as himself in the series. But storyline details about what brings Ed to Summer Bay are being kept under wraps for now,” they said. Home and Away also confirmed the news on its official Instagram account.

Sheeran last two albums + and X topped the charts in Australia and New Zealand, with his singles “Sing” and “Thinking Out Loud” reaching number one in the Australia singles chart.

Last week, the singer tweeted positive advice to X Factor New Zealand contestant Joe Irvine after the young hopeful was bullied live on air by judge Natalia Kills.

“Don’t’ worry about what anyone else says man. Enjoy yourself with it, that’s what singing is about, not what other people think,” he said.
