From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Cher has strongly suggested she'll headline Sydney Mardi Gras for its 40th anniversary, causing the event to sell out within three hours.

The musician, 71, tweeted a not-so-cryptic message to her fans that she'd be making an appearance in Australia this coming March; though the festival's organisers are yet to lend any official confirmation to the hint, the tweet does follow weeks of persistent rumours. Cher herself had already alluded to the event earlier this month, tweeting: "Where am I going in March?"

Either way, Cher sent fans scrambling for tickets to snag that golden opportunity to see the music legend live; before her tweet, there were 600 tickets left for the festival. Afterward, it took only three hours for organisers to announce the event had sold out.

"We have lots of exciting announcements coming up v soon - it’s going to be an INCREDIBLE NIGHT!," was all they'd offer attendees - for now.

Sydney Mardi Gras runs from mid-February to early March. Cher's last Australian tour was in 2005, though she has never performed at the event, which regularly sees major stars headline, including George Michael in 2010, Cyndi Lauper and Olivia Newton-John in 2008, and several appearances from homegrown stars Kylie and Dannii Minogue.
