From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Nashville band ELEL have put out a new video for their wonderful song 'Automatic' and you can watch the premiere here on The Independent.

Q&A with ELEL

What are you listening to at the moment?

Bon Iver - 22 a million

Hiss Golden Messenger - Heart Like A Levee

Ryuichi Sakamoto “Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence” - It's from a movie from 1983 starring Sakamoto and David Bowie. Sakamoto has done numerous soundtracks since then, but this was his first.

Skyway Man unreleased album, but he's released the first single Terre 9999. It's good friend James Wallace who lives in Nashville too and makes some of the best music in the whole wide world I swear. Debut album comes out in February

The Weeknd - Starboy

What are your plans for 2017?

We're hoping to tour in the spring, and do some festivals in the summer, possibly in the UK/Europe. We're also working on some new songs that we hope to finish and release asap. Looking to release a new single in February. We're real excited about our album Geode being out, but we're probably even more excited about finishing these new songs and releasing them.

As a live band, we've grown a lot over the last few years, and we're looking forward to putting some music out that shows where we're currently at. “Automatic” is actually the newest song on the album, and represents that energy the best.

We're planning to tour a lot this spring and summer. It's exciting for GEODE to be out and see it resonate with folks, but we love connecting with people most of all in person.

We've been focusing on those songs for close to two years, though, and we're really excited to focus on new music. “Automatic” was actually a new song/ last minute add to the album (GEODE) and is probably the best representation of where we're headed. We have other new songs we're working on and looking to finish and release those ASAP, hopefully a new single out in February or March.

What was the first gig you ever played and what’s been the best so far?

The first show we ever played was in February of 2014 at the Stone Fox here in Nashville. It's a sweet memory because a lot of our friends came out not knowing what to expect, and they were all kinda like, “Okay, this is kinda neat, keep it up!”

Our favorite show so far though has got to be the Treefort Festival in Boise, Idaho. We played a Shriners Lodge, which was one of the venues for the festival.

It was a big auditorium filled with all kinds of people from young kids to older folks. The vibe in there was so happy. Stefan (saxophone) passed out shakers to a lot of kids in the crowd and everyone got involved in the rhythm for the last few songs. There were just so many smiles in there, including on us as we hopped around the stage. That night was magic.
