From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt turned up to the US premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in a homemade Yoda costume, because when else is life going to hand him that opportunity? The next 20,000 Star Wars movies coming out every single year until the planet engulfs itself in flames?

Truly, celebrities are just like the rest of us. As in, they're in no way immune to the all-encompassing power of the Star Wars hype. Gordon-Levitt took the opportunity to geek-out at the world premiere for the cinematic event of the year, and likely last few years; rocking up in a charmingly DIY take on everyone's favourite pint-sized Jedi. We're taking green facepaint, cut-out ears, white bathrobe, and (of course) Grinch pyjama bottoms.

Sure, it won't be the flashiest of the costumes we'll be seeing in the coming days, but this is the true Star Wars spirit. Manically raiding your wardrobe for anything that might fit because, if you can't turn up to watch your favourite movie series dressed as your favourite character, then what is the point of existence in the first place?

Though there were plenty of subtle Leia buns and braids on the red carpet, as sported by the likes of Sofia Vergara and Janelle Monae; disappointingly few guests opted for the full-costume look Gordon-Levitt had going on. That is, apart from The Office's Rainn Wilson, who came along dressed as Obi-Wan Kenobi with his son dressed as Boba Fett, and undoubtedly had an absolutely magical time. Even the film's own stars got into the spirit, with John Boyega rocking a single leather glove à la Luke Skywalker, and Lupita Nyong'o turning up looking like a beautiful, sparkling galaxy.

Overall, the US premiere appears to have provided a spectacular start for this film's journey to screen; with predictions of record-breaking box office success flooding in, and initial Twitter reviews already heralding the movie as worthy of standing beside the classic trilogy. Wilson himself tweeted, "epic, awesome, perfect."

Let's just hope some other celebrities lead by example for the London premiere and we get some of the UK's finest thespians rocking up in Admiral Ackbar fish heads and Jabba the Hut fat suits. Please?
