Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Everything Everywhere All at Once dominated the 95th Academy Awards, which were held on Sunday night at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre.

Michelle Yeoh took home the Best Actress prize, becoming the first Asian woman and only second woman of colour to win the trophy. The film also won Best Picture, and Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for writer/directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.

Brendan Fraser cemented his comeback with a Best Actor win for The Whale, while Everything Everywhere stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Ke Huy Quan picked up Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor, respectively.

The night was not without controversy, with criticism aimed at Jimmy Kimmel’s interview with Malala and a painful encounter between model Ashley Graham and an “obnoxious” Hugh Grant.

Many also felt that Angela Bassett deserved the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. The award instead went to Jamie Lee Curtis, prompting what many viewers described as a “real” reaction from Bassett.

There were plenty of bold looks on the “champagne” carpet this year, including Rihanna who turned up in a T-shirt, trainers and bucket hat.

Angela Basset has arrived. Will she do the thing? Only Ariana DeBose will know.

From Audrey Hepburn to Gwyneth Paltrow, the most iconic Oscars dresses of all time

Red (or this year, champagne-coloured) carpet fashions are one of the most exciting things about the Academy Awards, with a host of stars expected to bring their A-game tonight.

Looking back, Sarah Young has compiled her list of the gowns that have earned a special place in fashion history over the years.

Ricky Gervais has no desire to host the Oscars

Gervais had a very blunt response to a fan on Twitter to a fan calling for The Office creator to host the Oscars.

The comedian has hosted the Golden Globes five times, earning a reputation as a savage presenter.

Hello Oscar viewers and British people staying up all night! This is Adam White taking over from Tom and Izzy and guiding you through the next few hours of presumably slap-free awards.

To keep this thing starry, here’s Michelle Yeoh looking like a Best Actress-in-waiting on the red carpet earlier. She’s gonna take it, right?

So rumours abound that the running order of tonight’s show has changed in the last few minutes, with Best Supporting Actress no longer being announced first. Rather the Best Animated Feature is reportedly opening the show. Is this because a Jamie Lee Curtis win would have broken all of our brains mere minutes in and the Oscar producers just couldn’t risk it?

Anyone tuning into red carpet coverage right about now will have seen an almost unnecessary amount of incredibly famous people, but a few will be missing from the night itself – including potential Best Picture winner (for producing Top Gun: Maverick) Tom Cruise.

We’re about six minutes away from kick-off, which means time to grab snacks or to take a bathroom break. I have done both, if you were wondering.
