Following up his surprise anthology sequel 10 Cloverfield Lane, producer JJ Abrams' new entry - titled The Cloverfield Paradox - dropped a trailer during Super Bowl LII with the news that it would be arriving on Netflix immediately after the match.
Originally named God Particle, the film was due to be released in cinemas later this year until reports revealed the streaming service was planning to take the project from Paramount.
The Cloverfield Paradox is directed by Julius Onah from a script by Oren Uziel and Doug Jung. It follows a group of astronauts aboard an international space station who must fight for their survival after making a shocking discovery. It stars David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Elizabeth Debicki, Ziyi Zhang, Daniel Brühl and Chris O'Dowd.
It seems the film will tie events depicted in the previous two films together by providing a reason as to why the creature was unleashed upon the world in the first place.
"10 years ago something happened. Today, we'll find out why" the streaming service wrote on Twitter, while the film's synopsis reads: "Orbiting above a planet on the brink of war, scientists test a device to solve an energy crisis and end up face-to-face with a dark alternate reality."
The Cloverfield Paradox is available to stream on Netflix right now.
