Cheryl Cole, Tamara Ecclestone, WAGs and reality TV stars are all in the south of France... but why?

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The Cannes Film Festival has long been a magnet for the A-List of world cinema, who flock to show off (and be part of) some of the most culturally important films.
But recently a new group of non-acting celebrities have started to make the pilgrimage to the Riviera to bathe in the bright lights of the paparazzi’s camera flash, leading The Independent to ask, why are vous ici?

Cheryl Cole, whose acting ability appears to be limited to performing in a band in St Trinian’s, caused a stir with her first appearance on La Croisette a couple of years ago. She has since become a regular in her role as the face of L’Oréal. This year’s hangers on, trying to attract any excess attention from the world’s media, include the likes of Kimberley Garner from Made in Chelsea, Chloe Sims from the rival reality show The Only Way is Essex, the former WAG Lizzie Cundy and the heiress Tamara Ecclestone.
Then there was the South Korean pop star Psy, who appeared to pitch up on the Croisette. But it turned out the person who was attracting all the camera flashes and free drinks wasn’t the pop star at all. Don’t expect to see them on the silver screen any time soon.
