From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. A first full-length trailer for the new J.J. Abrams sci-fi thriller Super 8 went online via Twitvid and Twitter March 11, reflecting Hollywood's embracing of social media and the film's young audience.

The film is written and directed by Abrams ( Star Trek, Mission: Impossible III, co-creator of the television series Lost) and produced by Steven Spielberg, whose films Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial influenced the themes.

The footage for this mysterious story of aliens, a story kept secret by Abrams, opens with a boy helping his friends with their amateur filmmaking when they witness a freight train explosion.

The movie camera falls as the kids run for cover but keeps shooting. Super 8 uses the concept of "captured film" seen in movies like Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity.

Super 8 is set in a small American town in the summer of 1979. When people go missing and inexplicable events begin happening, the boy's father searches for the truth but discovers something terrifying.

The film stars relative newcomers Elle Fanning ( The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Kyle Chandler ( King Kong) and Zach Mills ( The Changeling).

Super 8 arrives in theaters June 8.
