What is FTTP broadband?

FTTP broadband is the fastest broadband solution in the UK. It delivers broadband exclusively through fibre optic cables, negating the need for a broadband and phone deal, as it doesn’t require the copper lines of a landline service.

FTTP can reach ultrafast speeds of up to 1,000Mbps, although this will depend on the provider. Gaming broadband and business broadband deals are usually FTTP due to their incredibly fast speeds.

Alternatives to FTTP include fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) and Asymetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) broadband. FTTC uses a mix of fibre optic and copper cables, with speeds reaching up to 80Mbps. ADSL is the slowest solution in the country, operating exclusively with copper cables and providing speeds averaging 11Mbps.

Which parts of the UK have FTTP broadband?

The latest Ofcom report [1] reveals that 57 per cent of UK households have access to FTTP broadband. That number is expected to grow over the coming years, with the government aiming to connect full fibre broadband to 85 per cent of UK premises by 2025 and 99 per cent by 2030 [2].

Highly populated areas are more likely to have access to FTTP than rural communities. This is because providers prioritise FTTP in urban areas, where more people are likely to sign up. We surveyed over 2,000 broadband customers for better insight into FTTP coverage: 41 per cent of urban city-centre residents use FTTP broadband compared to 35 per cent of those living in small villages.

Overall, those living in large coastal towns use FTTP the most (65 per cent) and small coastal towns the least (37 per cent). But it isn’t just access to the service that impacts households’ use of FTTP broadband. Other factors, including price, speed requirements and provider preferences, will also affect the decision to sign up for services.

How can I get an FTTP broadband deal?

The easiest way to check if you can access FTTP broadband deals is to use our postcode checker and filter for the fastest speeds. If you are shown deals with speeds over 80Mbps, you can access FTTP. If the speeds are lower, you can only access FTTC and ADSL broadband.

If you can access FTTP, you will need to find the best broadband provider in your area to ensure a reliable and stable connection throughout your contract.

What are the pros and cons of FTTP broadband?

Now you know what FTTP broadband is, you need to decide if it will work for your household. FTTP broadband has many advantages and disadvantages that you should consider before investing in a deal.

For the third question (‘What issues, if any, have you experienced with your current broadband provider?’), respondents could select from the following: Price Hikes, Slow Speeds, High Prices, Frequent Disconnections, Poor Customer Service, Billing Issues, Other and N/A. The questions used to calculate our score were ‘How often, if at all, do you feel the actual speed of your broadband service matches the advertised speed?’, ‘How would you rate your experience with customer service and support from your broadband provider?’, ‘What issues, if any, have you experienced with your current broadband provider? (Select all that apply)’, ‘How easy or difficult is it/would it be to reach your provider using your preferred method?’, ‘How do you rate the value for money of your broadband service?’ and ‘How would you rate the transparency of pricing and additional fees in your broadband service?’.

FTTP Broadband FAQs

You can switch broadband providers with any broadband contract at any time. The switching process will depend on how far along you are in your contract, any additional features you may be receiving – such as landline or TV services – and any cancellation fees you may be liable to pay.

Our postcode checker is the best way to find cheap FTTP broadband deals. Generally, full fibre broadband is more expensive due to the higher speeds. However, you can still find affordable contracts from a range of providers. If you’re working with a budget, consider the needs of your household: do you require full fibre broadband, or will slower speeds be sufficient for your needs?
