Sam Asghari has filed for divorce from Britney Spears afer reports claimed the couple had separated over a fight about infidelity.
On Wednesday 16 August, TMZ reported that Asghari, 29, recently confronted Spears, 41, about rumours she cheated on him. The outlet noted that it was unable to confirm if the rumour “has any basis in fact,” but that the allegations sparked a “huge fight” between the couple.
A source told the outlet that Asghari had also moved out of the home he shared with Spears, and that he is now living in a place of his own.
According to the source, it was likely that the couple would divorce. “It’s only a matter of time before Sam files for divorce,” the source said.
On Thursday 17 August, it was reported that Asghari had filed for divorce from his wife of 14 months in Los Angeles County court late Wednesday. The model cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split and listed the couple’s separation date as 28 July.
The documents state that Asghari intends to obtain financial support from Spears, and have her pay for his lawyers, and that the value of Spears’ and Asghari’s assets, and those they own jointly, has yet to be determined.
The alleged feud and divorce filing comes just months after the pair recently celebrated their one-year wedding anniversary.
Spears and the actor first met in 2016 while working together on a music video for her song “Slumber Party”. They became engaged in 2021, before tying the knot at their home on 9 June 2022. Spears was previously married to Jason Alexander in 2004, and Kevin Federline, who she shares sons Sean and Jayden with, from 2004 to 2007.
The Independent has contacted a representative for Spears and Asghari for comment. As of now, neither Spears nor Asghari have commented publicly on the alleged infidelity or divorce filing. However, Spears broke her silence on Wednesday when she took to Instagram to share her plans to purchase a horse.
Prior to the couple’s June 2022 nuptials, the “Toxic” singer had Asghari sign an iron-clad prenuptial agreement that was “in her favour,” according to Page Six. “Any money she made before the wedding is protected,” a source told the outlet. Spears reportedly tasked attorney Mathew Rosengart, who helped free her from her 13-year conservatorship, with working out the terms of the prenuptial agreement.
Amid the divorce filing, it was reported that Spears has hired Laura Wasser, a divorce attorney well-known for her roster of celebrity clients, and would be continuing to work with Rosengart.
On Instagram, where Spears uses the name Maria River Red, her most recent post with Asghari is from 22 June. In the photo, the couple can be seen smiling as they pose back to back.
Spears, who was released from her controversial conservatorship in November 2021 after 13 years, is releasing a memoir about her “freedom, fame, motherhood, survival, faith and hope” titled The Woman In Me. The book, which Spears said she “worked her a** off” to write, will be released on 24 October.
