Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

It’s a hard choice. Do you try and make yourself look cool; to stand out to your mates? Or do you just say no, and keep hold of that little bit of innocence that’s inside all of us? I made the wrong choice.

It was a couple of weeks ago now; it was a school day and I was in geography. One of my friends came up to me and said ‘Hey, there’s this really funny video – you should go have a look at it’. So at the end of the day I went home. I took my phone upstairs to my room and easily searched up the video. I saw it and was disgusted.

I kept it all inside me and worried about whether to tell mum or not. But one day at bedtime, I asked if I could have a chat. We went downstairs, where I told her all about the video and how upset I was about keeping it a secret from her.

She understood and comforted me and I had a good night’s sleep that night.

I mean, it’s bad enough that I watched it, but imagine if someone even younger, eight maybe, was to watch it?

It would be horrible. What I hate is that it’s so easy to get to that kind of stuff, and that other people have watched this video and been disgusted by it but no one has done anything about it.

I want people to think before they search.
