Manchester City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo faces lengthy spell on sidelines with Achilles injury

Less than a week after Kevin De Bruyne's serious knee injury, Bravo looks set to be sidelined for a long spell

Claudio Bravo became the second Manchester City player to suffer a serious injury in the space of a week on Monday, rupturing the Achilles’ tendon in his right foot.

Bravo, City’s second-choice goalkeeper, sustained the injury in training and will fly out to Barcelona on Tuesday for assessments to determine the severity of the problem.

The 35-year-old will be treated by Ramon Cugat, a doctor who regularly works with City's injured players, and faces a potential six-month spell on the sidelines.

Before confirmation of Bravo’s injury came on Monday night, he tweeted: “No matter what happens, or how bad it looks today, life goes on, and tomorrow will certainly be better.”

Last week, City lost Kevin De Bruyne - the outstanding player of their title-winning campaign last season - to a knee ligament injury that is expected to make him unavailable to Pep Guardiola for three months.

Though Bravo is not as central to City’s plans to De Bruyne, the injury will still come as a blow, depriving Guardiola of experienced cover for first-choice goalkeeper Ederson.

City’s decision to sell Joe Hart and Angus Gunn to Burnley and Southampton respectively this summer leaves just 20-year-old academy product Daniel Grimshaw as back-up.

Bravo made 13 City appearances in total last season, predominantly in the domestic cup competitions, and played in the Community Shield victory over Chelsea earlier this month.
