Goals by Callum Harriott and Simon Church mean that Chris Powell, who was left-back when the Londoners won at Hillsborough in 2006 on the way to their last appearance in the sixth round, will take his side to meet Sheffield United at Bramall Lane the weekend after next.
Charlton took to the front foot from the off. The home goal had already been under pressure, with Astrit Ajdarevic twice denied by Wednesday bodies. After 22 minutes, another shot by the Swede was blocked, but the ball ran to Harriott, whose straight drive flew past goalkeeper Damian Martinez into the net.
Wednesday improved towards half-time. Gary Gardner and Leon Best both launched creditable efforts, although goalkeeper Ben Hamer dealt with both.
The equaliserafter 57 minutes, lashed in by Best after Manuel Llera rose to win a free kick flighted in by Chris Maguire.
No sooner had the prize of meeting United seemed within Wednesday’s grasp than Charlton were in front again, Church stealing in behind the defence to knock a neat header past Martinez.
The home fans thought Wednesday had drawn level again on 72 minutes, but the Goal Decision System went against them when Atdhe Nuhiu’s header hit the inside of the left post and rebounded across goal to be caught by Hamer.
