Paris Saint-Germain appoint Thomas Tuchel as next manager on two-year contract
The Ligue 1 champions have named the former Borussia Dortmund head coach as the man to replace Unai Emery
Paris Saint-Germain have appointed Thomas Tuchel as their next manager on a two-year contract. The former Borussia Dortmund head coach will replace Unai Emery, who will step down at the end of the season.
Tuchel has been out of work since leaving Borussia Dortmund 12 months ago, where the 44-year-old won the German Cup during a successful but turbulent two-year spell in which he fell out with the club’s hierarchy over the sale of key players and was eventually sacked. He will be expected to deliver both domestic and European success to the Qatari-owned club.
Emery took over at PSG in 2016, losing the league title in his first season to Leonardo Jardim’s thrilling Monaco side which was dismantled last summer. PSG were resurgent this year, reclaiming Ligue 1 in a domestic treble with Neymar spearheading their success, but failure to make significant inroads in the Champions League underpinned the decision not to renew the Spaniard’s terms.
“It is with great joy, pride and ambition that I join this great global football club that is Paris Saint-Germain,” said Tuchel. “I look forward to working with all these great players, all of whom are among the best on the planet.
“With my staff, we will do everything to help the team push their limits to the highest international level. There is tremendous potential in Paris and this is the most exciting challenge that has come to me.”
