Steven Gerrard insists 'it's not fair' to compare Mohamed Salah to Lionel Messi

Steven Gerrard has insisted it's "not fair" to compare Mohamed Salah to Lionel Messi, despite the Egyptian's remarkable run of form.

Salah hit Liverpool's second in their 5-0 demolition of Porto last night to take his goal tally across all competitions to 30.

It was a moment of genuine world-class ability from the winger as he pounced on James Milner's rebounded shot, juggled the ball around goalkeeper Jose Sa and a diving Diego Reyes before calmly hitting home from close range.

Liverpool went on to extend their lead by three further goals, with Sadio Mane notably clinching a superb hat-trick for the visitors.

But it was Salah's goal which caught Gerrard's eye as he praised the 25-year-old for his "moment of magic" - though the Liverpol U18 coach played down comparisions with Barcelona's Messi.

“Liverpool have had too much aggression for Porto. They look like they can score every time they go forward,’ Gerrard said on BT Sport .

“And we’ve seen a moment of magic from Mo Salah.

“It’s not fair to the kid, though, to compare him to Messi.”

Having put five past Porto, Liverpool's place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League is all but secured. The second leg takes place at Anfield on 6 March.
