A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following a fatal stabbing in north London.

He was detained on Friday after a 30-year-old man was knifed to death outside an ice-cream parlour in Islington earlier this week.

The victim has been named locally as Marcel Campbell, a father-of-two from Tottenham.

He was found with multiple stab wounds following an attack in Upper Street, near Islington Town Hall, at 6.30pm on Monday.

Mr Campbell was pronounced dead in the street, which is lined with high-end shops and restaurants.

“He was a wonderful father, he lived for his kids. He was a good boy,” his aunt Lynette told the Evening Standard. “We are losing too many of our young people. His mother is devastated.”

The Metropolitan Police appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Whellams said: “This was a brutal attack that was carried out on a busy street in broad daylight. I am asking anyone who saw the assault or has any information to contact detectives.

“In particular we would like to hear from anyone who was in the area around this time, who may have filmed any part of the incident on their phones or has dash-cam footage of the incident.

“Your information could be vital in helping us establish the course of events that unfolded during the early evening of 21 May and what caused a young man to lose his life.”

The stabbing is the latest in a spate of knife crime in London, where police have launched more than 60 murder investigations this year.
