Joe Wicks praises NHS staff after being admitted to hospital for surgery on injured hand

Fitness guru likened pain to 'liquid hot magma'

Joe Wicks has been admitted to hospital for surgery on his hand after spending the night in “throbbing” pain.

The fitness entrepreneur, who has been keeping children across the world fit and active with his daily PE classes, fractured his hand a few weeks ago after falling off a bike.

On Friday Wicks, who is also known as The Body Coach, updated his followers on Instagram stories, explaining: “Great news. Bones have healed.

“Wires haven’t broke but the soft tissue is inflamed and possibly infected. They are operating today and removing the wires. They’ve given me some strong painkillers which have taken the edge off it.”

However, the 33-year-old later shared another clip of himself lying in a hospital bed, explaining that his operation had to be delayed until Saturday. “They aren’t able to do the operation today, they have other patients in the queue, they’re a bit slower with certain things so I’m staying tonight,” he said.

“They’re going to give me some nice morphine, and some antibiotics on the drip-a-roo. And in the morning, hopefully first thing, I’ll be getting the wires out.”

Wicks added that the infection in his hand was “no joke” and that the codeine and liquid morphine he had been given was no longer helping to ease the pain.

“So glad I’m staying here tonight. I woke up all night last night as it was throbbing and pulsating like liquid hot magma,” Wicks said. “Thanks for all your well wishes. Gonna get a good night’s sleep I think.”

Wicks went on to praise the NHS and frontline workers for continuing to provide people with the care they need during the coronavirus outbreak.

“I’m just having a bit of a moment really, where I’m feeling super grateful for this healthcare system we’ve got, and these people that are coming in,” he explained.

“It doesn't matter how old you are, when you see a nurse or doctor you instantly feel safe and calm and relaxed.

“I just think it's amazing, the NHS, the people that are out here still grafting still, it's wonderful that people are that kind to do that and dedicate their life to helping other people that are sick and unwell feel safe and get better.”

Last month, Wicks reassured his followers that his online PE classes would continue despite his injury.

During an appearance on The Andrew Marr Show, Wicks spoke about the cast on his arm and said: “It hasn’t stopped me.

“I’ve been doing one-armed burpees, I’ve been doing squats, lunges, all sorts.”

At the start of the initiative, the fitness guru pledged to donate all of the revenue generated by the classes to NHS Charities Together.

So far, the videos have helped to raise more than £91,000. “Thank you so much for taking part and helping raise all this money for a cause which I feel we can all be proud of,” he previously told fans.

“The great news is we can grow this number even bigger each week by coming back and tuning in again.”
