Today, Starbucks has announced that people working in the emergency services will be offered a 10 per cent discount in all of their branches across the UK.

Those who work in the emergency services spend their days looking out for others, putting themselves last and saving lives.

To say that they deserve a little bit of extra recognition and respect once in a while is a massive understatement.

Starbucks has now officially teamed up with Blue Light Card and Defence Discount Service to provide a multitude of emergency service personnel with a ten per cent discount off every purchase for them and their family and friends.

The Blue Light Card and the Defence Privilege Card each cost £4.99 for a five-year membership, and anyone who works in the UK emergency services, the NHS, the armed forces or is a military veteran can sign up for one.

“We’ve always championed those who have done brilliant jobs in the community, so it’s time to thank our everyday heroes who are devoted to helping our communities by partnering with Blue Light Card and the Defence Discount Service,” said Robert Lynch, vice president of operations at Starbucks Europe.

Working in the emergency services can be very stressful, with many suffering from mental health issues due to the nature of their work.

According to a study conducted by Mind in 2016, two thirds of staff and volunteers working for Blue Light in England and Wales had considered leaving their jobs due to stress or poor mental health.

Of the 1,600 staff and volunteers assessed, one in four had even contemplated taking their own lives.

Providing those who work in the emergency services with little perks is just one small way of letting them know how valued they are by the rest of society.

“We are proud to welcome Starbucks to Blue Light Card and Defence Discount Service,” said Tom Dalby, managing director of Blue Light Card and head of Defence Discount Service.

“It is great to see Starbucks recognising the hard work that the UK’s emergency services, NHS and armed forces do within our communities and it is their way of saying thank you.

“Our members love saving on the high street, and all the coffee fans will be very pleased to hear that Starbucks is involved."
