This year a plethora of stars, including Kim Kardashian and Zendaya, descended upon the 2018 MTV Movie and TV Awards at the Barker Hanger in Santa Monica.

As usual, the guests brought their A-game with looks that both shocked and surprised.

But, while us mere mortals might admire their ensembles, it can be difficult to imagine a situation it would be acceptable for us to sport such looks as head-to-toe floral sequins a-la Chloe and Halle Bailey, or as many ruffles as Francia Raisa’s dazzling jumpsuit.

So instead, we’ve rounded up five of the biggest red carpet trends of the night and scoured the high street for some more practical ways to wear them.

Block Sequins

Embroidered sequins jumpsuit, £49.99, Mango

Is there a better way to make an impact than replicating the Kira Kira app? We think not. The perfect look for all-out glamour, head-to-toe sequins were one of the most popular trends among guests.

One of our favourite looks of the night came from R&B duo Chloe and Halle Bailey who both donned contrasting floral Marc Jacobs dresses – one in red and yellow, the other green and pink. A more subtle take on the trend came from Black Mirror actress Cristin Milioti who wore hers in shimmering stripes set on a high-neck midi dress.

Fancy replicating this look IRL? We love this navy playsuit from Mango which is embroidered with a spatter of sequins. To let the shimmer do the talking, we suggest wearing yours with strappy black sandals.

Head-to-Toe Red

Midi Tie Neck Dress, £89, & Other Stories

Nothing screams Hollywood siren quite like red so it seems only natural that many of the night’s stars should opt for looks in scarlet, ruby and pillar box red.

Not one for the faint-hearted, celebrities went all out with tonal looks that covered everything from floor-length dresses to stiletto heels and punchy red lips. Tessa Thompson paired her maxi-style co-cord from Rosie Assoulin with a matching furry handbag, while Halsey opted for a revealing Julien McDonald gown with corresponding heels.

For everyday wear, we suggest investing in a flowy midi length dress like this one from & Other Stories which looks just as great worn with white tennis shoes as it does a pair of heels.

Power Suits

Double Breasted Jacket & Straight Cut Trousers, £39.99, Zara

Suits have shaken off their corporate reputation to become a firm favourite among the fashion crowd but we’re not talking clean-cut boardroom blazers here. This time around the conservative two-piece is smart, edgy and oh so glamorous.

Case in point: Yara Shaidi’s pastel blue Tory Burch suit which wowed the crowds with its sharp lines and obi-style waist belt. The men were also keen to impress with 13 Reasons Why actor Steven Silver opting for a burnt orange two-piece while Dacre Montgomery opted for a total white-out.

A piece that any fashion fan should own, finding the right suit is all about the fit and we think this option from Zara ticks all the boxes. Wear yours with either a camisole and classic courts or a simple tee.

The Return of Millennial Pink

Jacquard Bow Slip Midi Dress, £46, Topshop

Its seems the rumours that Gen-Z yellow is steadily outpacing Millennial pink are bust because at the 2018 MTV Awards stars were knee-deep in a range of tones from cotton candy to fuchsia.

While Riverdale actress Madelaine Petsch opted for a subtle take on the trend with a powdery Prada dress, Kelsey Asbille went with a sheer floor-length dress and matching undergarments in bubblegum pink.

Repositioning itself as the go-to colour of the season, we think this slip midi dress from Topshop will serve you well throughout summer.

Ruffle Trims

One Shoulder Body, £30, Monki

Frilly garb has received a pretty bad reputation over the years thanks to its association with crinoline toilet roll covers but it seems the stars aren’t willing to give up on its fashion credentials.

While Francia Raisia opted for a frilled, one-shouldered jumpsuit, Storm Reid wore for a flirty hemmed Viktor & Rolf dress and host of the annual award show, Tiffany Haddish, sported a silver dress with a ruffle trim top.

To recreate Raisia's look we suggest picking up this one-shouldered body suit and pairing it with high-waisted trousers.
