Rick and Morty episode explains famous Szechwan Sauce origin

Before the first episode of Rick and Morty’s third season joked about McDonald’s limited edition Szechuan sauce – released alongside the 1998 Disney movie Mulan – the show’s creators failed to predict the extent to which they were about to impact McDonald’s.

Following the broadcast, thousands of fans signed a petition demanding the fast food chain bring back the sauce, McDonald’s eventually giving into demand and releasing a batch.

On the 7 October, a “limited” number of packets were released to the world. Unfortunately, there was not nearly enough supply for the legions of fans who arrived at restaurants, police being called to some as outrage spread.

Speaking to Vulture about the whole fiasco, co-creator Dan Harmon spoke about not receiving any notice from McDonald’s about the promotion and the show’s fans.

“It’s weird to get mugged by McDonald’s. It’s kind of an honour,” he told the publication of McDonald’s lack of communication with the Rick and Morty team.

Commenting on the fan response, Harmon said: “I wouldn’t wish that show’s fans on any fast-food restaurant. I think everybody got what they deserved all around.”

McDonald’s later apologised to fans for not producing enough sauce, releasing a further 20 million packets, as well as a podcast named The Sauce. Unfortunately, the flavour of the sauce was not well received by fans.
