Trump calls protesters ‘thugs’ after George Floyd death in police custody

Taylor Swift has received praise for a tweet in which she spoke out against Donald Trump and his threat to unleash violence against protesters in Minneapolis.

“After stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism your entire presidency, you have the nerve to feign moral superiority before threatening violence?” the singer tweeted on Friday.

She also told the president: “We will vote you out in November.”

Trump previously reacted to demonstrations unfolding in Minnesota over the death of George Floyd, a black man who was seen on video pleading for air as a white police officer knelt on his neck.

He tweeted about the protesters: “These THUGS are dishonouring the memory of George Floyd, and I won’t let that happen.

“Just spoke to Governor Tim Walz and told him that the Military is with him all the way. Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts. Thank you!”

Many have commended Swift’s decision to voice her dissent over Trump’s stance.

Alyssa Milano wrote in response to the singer’s tweet: ”Thank you for using your voice for good.”

Ben Platt replied with “f*** yeah” next to a heart emoji, and Olympian Adam Rippon wrote: “WE WILL VOTE HIM OUT.”

Queer Eye‘s Bobby Berk told Swift: “So proud of you”, also using a heart emoji, while writer and performer Bill Corbett wrote: “Taylor Swift stayed quiet on politics for a long time, and in that time a lot of white people were hoping she was secretly a Trumpist or at least adjacent. So sorry for your loss, #MAGA.”

Political analyst and radio show host Zerlina Maxwell tweeted “Taylor Swift said that with her whole chest. She tagged the president of these United States. She’s got more guts than the entire Republican Party. I’m sitting here so proud.”
