Steven Spielberg has praised the Time’s Up and #MeToo campaigns, calling the current movement a "watershed moment" for the movie industry.

"It's been a rich and diverse year for film and for gender and for race, and for speaking out," the acclaimed director said while accepting the Legend of Our Lifetime award at the Empire Awards.

"Thank you, Time's Up. We were very much on board from the very beginning, my wife Kate and I. This is more important than any of us can ever really realise.”

The Indiana Jones, Jaws, and ET filmmaker added: "I think in 10 years we'll look back and realise what a watershed moment we are all experiencing together. 2017 to 2018, it's extraordinary what's happening right now.”

Time’s Up and #MeToo began in the wake of multiple actors making sexual harassment allegations against disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein.

Multiple other Hollywood personal have since had allegations made against them, including Kevin Spacey, James Toback, and Brett Ratner.

Meanwhile, at the Empire Awards, Star Wars: The Last Jedi came away as the night’s biggest winner, including best film and best actress for Daisy Ridley.

Other winners — voted for by fans — included Hugh Jackman for best actor, Get Out for best horror, and God’s Own Country for best British film.
