Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is in talks to voice a demi-god in upcoming Disney film Moana.

The US actor and professional wrestler has been lined up for the role of Maui, who helps a young girl on her ocean adventure in search of a fabled island, The Wrap reports.

Ron Clements and Jon Musker, the team behind The Little Mermaid, are joining forces as directors for the CG-animated movie, set for a late 2016 release.

The official plot synopsis reads: "In the ancient South Pacific world of Oceania, Moana, a born navigator, sets sail in search of a fabled island.

"During her incredible journey, she teams up with her hero, the legendary demi-god Maui, to traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and ancient folklore."

Clements said in a statement that Moana is "one of the great thrills of [his] career" and promised a "big adventure set in this beautiful world of Oceania".

"Moana is indomitable, passionate and a dreamer with a unique connection to the ocean itself," Musker added. "She's the kind of character we all root for, and we can’t wait to introduce her to audiences."

The role of Moana has not yet been cast and no official deal has been made with Johnson.

Johnson last voiced a character in 2009, for animated comedy Planet 51 alongside Jessica Biel, John Cleese and Gary Oldman.

He will soon be playing villain Black Adam in DC Comics film Shazam before starring in Fast and Furious instalment Furious 7 next spring.
