A man who was served a “gross” cheese toastie on a Jet2 flight has said he won’t be eating the airline’s food ever again.

Dean Willis shared a photo of the offending meal on Facebook, in which the sandwich can be seen covered in a sloppy, mustard-coloured filling that has exploded out of the sides.

He compared his version of the toastie to the official Jet2 advert, labelled “Expectation vs reality”.

Mr Willis captioned the image: “The other week I hopped on a plane to Spain, flying with Jet2.com & Jet2holidays.

“Over the speaker they announce that their toasties were half price. Greedy git over here was a little hungry so took them up on their offer.

“I got all excited because Apple Pay worked on the plane and I didn’t have to break into my euros.

“They then handed me my ‘toastie’. It’s not quite what I expected and the look of it reflected the taste. Needless to say, I’ll be filling up beforehand next time.”

Commenters on Facebook called the sandwich “gross” and asked, “Did they drop it from height on previous flight or something?”.

One person shared a gif of a baby pulling up a nappy, suggesting the toastie looked like something you might find inside; another replied with a gif of Sesame Street’s Elmo on the toilet.

The snack, usually £4.30 but sold to Mr Willis for £2.15, was described as offering a “select blend of three cheeses, a hint of red onion and roasted tomatoes served in a toasted bloomer bread”.

A Jet2 spokesperson told The Sun: “Our toasties consistently receive great feedback from customers, so we were surprised to see this.

“If Dean would like to get in touch with our customer services team, we would be happy to discuss this further.”

It’s not the first time an inflight meal has proved a let-down.

In November 2019, a British Airways passenger called his business class breakfast “disgusting” after being served a burnt-looking cheese and tomato toastie.

Charles Allen was flying on flight 208 from Miami to London Heathrow when he was served the disappointing meal.

He posted a picture of the offending toastie to Facebook group British Airways Complaints Advice, writing: “Cabin crew agreed that it was an insult and I could get better food on Ryanair.

“The business class seats on BA are bad enough but the food now really takes the P.”

British Airways said it received no complaints about the food on this particular flight, either from customers – including Mr Allen – or crew.

A spokesperson told The Independent: “We pride ourselves on the quality of the meals we offer onboard and have heavily invested in our catering, in all cabins.

“We have not received any complaints regarding the catering on this flight.”

The Independent has contacted Jet2 for comment.
