Sung three voices per part, with judicious use of solo voices in the florid sections and a modest continuo of organ and violone, the Flemish Radio Choir’s brisk Bach Motets is a welcome addition to the catalogue. Less fussy than René Jacobs’s recording, less intimate than Philippe Herreweghe’s, it balances seriousness and spectacle. Though the choir’s default vowel sound is “ah”, their diction is excellent, their blend clean. Conductor Bo Holten knows when to take his foot off the accelerator and the transitions in “Jesu, Meine Freude” are superbly handled. “Ich lasse dich nicht” is also included.
