Iceland might be famous for volcanic landscapes, waterfalls and geysers, but here, broadcaster Alex Zane heads off the beaten track to get a sneak peek at an alternative side of the island.

The locals tell him about the distinctive and little known Icelandic horse and how important is it to their country. Having first arrived in Iceland in the 9th century, these sturdy equines are an intrinsic part of Icelandic heritage - one that the six million visitors who flock to the island each year rarely find out about.
